Botox

What is Botox?

Botox injections are noted primarily for the ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. They're also used to treat conditions such as neck spasms (cervical dystonia), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), an overactive bladder and lazy eye. Botox injections may also help prevent chronic migraines.

Botox injections use a toxin called onobotulinumtoxinA to temporarily prevent a muscle from moving. This toxin is produced by the microbe that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning. Botox was the first drug to use botulinum toxin.

Hyperhidrosis: In this condition, excessive sweating occurs even when the temperature isn't hot and you're not exerting yourself.

Chronic migraine: If you experience migraines more than 15 days a month, Botox injections may help reduce headache frequency.

What can you treat?

  • Wrinkles and fine lines: Botox injections can be used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines, primarily in the forehead, between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), and around the eyes (crow's feet).
  • Migraine headaches: Botox has been approved by regulatory authorities in many countries for the treatment of chronic migraines. It is administered as a series of injections to specific areas of the head and neck.
  • Excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis): Botox can be used to treat excessive sweating in areas such as the underarms, hands, and feet. It works by blocking the chemical signals responsible for activating sweat glands.
  • Muscle spasticity: Botox injections can help reduce muscle stiffness and spasticity in conditions such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries. It works by blocking the signals that cause muscle contractions.
  • Strabismus and crossed eyes: Botox can be used to treat certain eye conditions like strabismus (misaligned eyes) and crossed eyes (esotropia). It is injected into specific eye muscles to help realign them and improve coordination.
  • Overactive bladder: Botox injections can be used to treat overactive bladder, a condition characterized by frequent and urgent urination. Botox helps relax the bladder muscles, reducing urinary frequency and urgency.
  • Facial asymmetry: Botox can be used to treat facial asymmetry caused by muscle imbalances. By selectively weakening certain muscles, Botox can help improve facial symmetry.
